“Research has shown that when parents are involved in their child’s education, student achievement increases.  Students earn higher grades, test scores, have better self-esteem and are more likely to graduate from high school.  At Kennesaw, we encourage parent involvement.  Many of our parents have attended our Parent Orientation Night which focused on ways to help students be successful in school.”  Dr. Kathie Elliott

Committee Info & Volunteer Opportunities

Accelerated Reader:

Many of the books in the media center are designated as Accelerated Reader (AR) books.  These books are given a point value based on their difficulty.  When a student reads one of these books, they may then take a test and earn points based on the test results.  These points are then traded in for goodies at the “swap shop”.  The PTA helps purchase the swap shop prizes as well as additional AR tests.  The AR Committee works with Beth Finnegan, Media Specialist, to run the AR program.  The committee’s responsibilities include running the AR store and painting children’s names on the wall outside the library.  The committee chairs are responsible for inventorying and stocking the merchandise for the store, organizing volunteers to work at the store, setting up and taking down the store and painting names on the wall.  From the school’s main website, click the link on the left (AR Test Links) to access the AR book search tool, which allows you to search AR books/tests available at KES.

Volunteer Opportunities: Volunteers are needed to work approx. 1 hour shifts at the AR store when it is open, four times a year.  Volunteers are also needed to do the stenciling and painting of names on the wall.

Book Fair:

A book fair is held both in the Fall and the Spring.  The event serves both as an event that encourages reading and gets kids excited about books, and as a PTSA fundraiser.  All funds are used to purchase books and Accelerated Reader quizzes for our students.

The Book Fair Committee is responsible for securing book fair volunteers to help with decorations, as well as the running of the book fair.  The Media Specialist and her assistant do much of the paperwork, but the committee chair is responsible for recruiting and scheduling volunteers.

Volunteer Opportunities:  Decorations for the book fair begin months in advance, so any increment of volunteer time would be well used to color and cut decorations for the event.  Working at the book fair involves helping children write their wish lists, and straightening and stocking shelves.

    • Learn respect and appropriate response to persons with disabilities.
    • Learn how to reach out to other schools and the community with knowledge and understanding of disabilities

Reflections:

Reflections is a nationwide PTA-sponsored program to celebrate children’s gifts and talents. Projects falling under the following categories are judged by grade level: visual arts, literature, photography, film and dance/choreography and music.  Winners at the school level may advance to district, state, and national levels. All participants are honored with special recognition.

Volunteer Opportunities: In 2008-2009 this committee will need new chairs.  The chairs of Kennesaw, Big Shanty, Awtrey, and North Cobb usually work together in getting judges for the 6 categories and in coordinating due dates and dates of their ceremonies.  This committee has one chair or two.  Chairs are responsible for sending out an initial flyer to all students in early September with that year's theme.  Interested students are sent packets containing rules and a registration form.  Projects must be submitted by a specific due date.

The schools work together to find judges for all 6 categories.   Projects are judged, winners are announced, followed by a breakfast banquet for all participants.  Parents, students, and administration attend to honor the reflections winners.  Projects by first and second place winners in each category are packaged and sent away for  council level judging.  Volunteers could help the chairs with any of these events.

In 2007-2008 the only people on the "committee" were the co-chairs.  However, we have done this for 7 years, so it was really not a big deal.  NEXT year, we are not planning to return.

Co-Chair: Amy Geil, ageil@kennesawptsa.org

Room Representative:

The Room Representative Chair coordinates the room representatives for the 2007/2008 school year.  Essentially, each class should have at least one room representative (a.k.a. room parent”).   The room representatives role is to assist the teacher in coordinating activities, finding class volunteers and acting as a communicator of important info between PTSA and the parents of the class.  The role of the chairperson is to help ensure that each class has a room representative, to help them to understand their jobs, and to disseminate information that may assist them in those roles.

Chair:  Sandra Kulynych, skulynych@kennesawptsa.org.

Secret Santa:
